Consumers continue to make dietary fiber, which has benefits for cholesterol and digestive health, a nutritional priority. According to a recent report on the website, Nutraceuticals World, 68% of US consumers check to see if a product contains fiber before they buy it. Yet, on average, consumers still do not get enough fiber in their diet, which studies show should be around 25-30 grams per day. This gap is creating a market opportunity for manufacturers of fiber-rich, functional foods. For example, the market for prebiotic fibers, non-digestible fiber compounds which stimulate the growth of good bacteria in the gut, is expected to double in sales to more than $220 million by 2016. Fiber-based nutrition bars and fiber gummy supplements have also become increasingly popular.
