Fish Oil May Protect Against Alcohol-Induced Brain Damage

A recent animal study has found that omega-3 DHA, a fatty acid found in fish oil, may protect against alcohol-induced brain damage. Published online in the journal PLoS One, the study involved exposing rat brain samples to alcohol at a level equivalent to 4 times the legal driving limit. Researchers discovered that when they further exposed the brain samples to omega-3 DHA, the inflammation and neuronal death caused by the alcohol dropped by 90%. While the next step is to replicate these results in intact male and female rats, the study adds to previous research showing fish oil’s potential to protect the brain.
