Herbal Extract Provides Benefits for People with Bipolar Disorder

Ashwagandha, one of the major herbs of traditional Indian medicine, provides three separate types of cognitive benefits to people with bipolar disorder. In a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, subjects with bipolar disorder received 500 mg per day of Sensoril, an extract of ashwagandha root and leaf, or a placebo. Working memory, reaction time, and social cognition improved in the ashwagandha group. The specific product used in the study, Sensoril, is available to consumers as an ingredient in several dietary supplements.

Ashwagandha has also been associated with immune function and with osteoarthritis when used in combination with the herbs boswellia and turmeric.
