Country Fried Steak with Brown Gravy
Make this diner classic at home instead of going out.
Ingredients
- 4 round steaks
- 1 Tbs salt
- 1 Tbs pepper
- 4 Tbs flour
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 4 cups water
- 1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce
Directions
- Prepare steaks by pounding them out with the larger side of a meat mallet. Salt and pepper steaks and dredge in flour.
- Add enough vegetable oil in large skillet to be about 1/8 inch deep. Heat skillet over medium heat. Fry steaks until browned. Remove steaks from pan.
- Add enough flour to pan to make the roux. Add additional salt and pepper. Brown flour over medium heat until it is deep in color and fragrant.
- Whisk in water. Add Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil over high heat and reduce to a simmer.
- Simmer for about 10 minutes before serving. Serve with steamed white rice and roasted vegetables, if desired.
