Drug

Bumetanide

Pronounced

"bue-MET-a-nide"

Uses

Bumetanide is used to reduce extra fluid in the body (edema) caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. Getting rid of extra water helps to reduce fluid in the lungs so that you can breathe easier. It also helps to decrease swelling of the arms, legs, and stomach/abdomen. This medication is known as a diuretic (the same kind of drug as a "water pill"). It causes your body to get rid of extra water by increasing the amount of urine you make.

The nasal form of bumetanide is not meant for long-term use and is used when the drug cannot be taken by mouth.

Warning

Bumetanide is a very strong medication. Using too much of this drug can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It is important that you are closely monitored by your doctor while using this medication. Tell your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, including unusual dry mouth/thirst, muscle cramps/weakness, slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, or confusion.

Other Uses

This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved professional labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. This medication may also be used for high blood pressure.

How to Use This Medication

Read the Patient Information Leaflet and Instructions for Use if available from your pharmacist before you start using this medication and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication is for use in the nose only. Remove the nasal spray from the package only when you are ready to use it. Do not test or prime the spray before use. Doing so will make you lose the dose.

Before using, blow your nose to clear your nostrils. Spray this medication in the nose as directed by your doctor, usually once a day. If you use this drug too close to bedtime, you may need to wake up to urinate. It is best to use this medication at least 4 hours before your bedtime.

To use the spray, remove the medication from the package. Tilt your head back slightly and carefully insert the tip of the spray nozzle into a nostril. Make sure to point the tip away from the center of your nose. Close the other nostril with the other index finger and then press on the plunger to spray the medication into your nostril. Breathe in gently through the open nostril and breathe out slowly through your mouth. Keep your head back slightly for about 1 minute after using the spray and try not to blow your nose. Each nasal spray only has 1 spray. If your dose is for more than 1 spray, use another nasal spray in the opposite nostril. Throw away the nasal spray after using it.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.
