Drug

Mupirocin Calcium

Pronounced

"myou-PEER-oh-sin"

Uses

Mupirocin is used to temporarily get rid of certain bacteria in the nose. This treatment is part of a program that lowers the risk of infection. Mupirocin is an antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.

How to Use This Medication

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start using mupirocin and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Wash your hands before and after using this medication. Use it as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening). Apply half of the ointment from the tube into one nostril and the other half into the other nostril. Then gently squeeze your nostrils together and release. Repeat this for about 1 minute to spread the ointment inside your nose. Throw away the tube after you have used it in both nostrils. Do not re-use it.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Use this drug at evenly spaced intervals.

Continue to use it for the full time prescribed. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow.

Keep mupirocin away from your eyes. If you accidentally get it in your eyes, rinse well with plenty of water.

The manufacturer says not to use this medication with any other nasal products.
