Uses
This medication is used to treat a certain mental/mood disorder (schizophrenia). Risperidone belongs to a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain.
Warning
There may be a slightly increased risk of serious, possibly fatal side effects (such as stroke, heart failure, fast/irregular heartbeat, pneumonia) when this medication is used by older adults with dementia. This medication is not approved for the treatment of dementia-related behavior problems. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication, as well as other effective and possibly safer treatments for dementia-related behavior problems, with the doctor.
How to Use This Medication
This medication is given by injection under the skin of the abdomen or upper arm by a health care professional. It is given as directed by your doctor. Depending on the brand, this medication is usually given once every 1 or 2 months. It is used to switch from taking risperidone by mouth. You should not be taking the medication by mouth while receiving the injection under the skin.
You may have a lump at the injection site for several weeks. This lump will get smaller over time. Do not rub or massage the injection site. Try not to place belts or clothing waistbands on the lump.
The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
You should receive this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, mark your calendar with a reminder. Keep receiving this medication even if you feel well.
Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.
