New Dairy-Free Milks Abound

Is cow milk going the way of the milk man? Maybe not yet, but demand for dairy alternatives is growing. To meet this demand, dairy alternative products on the market are also expanding. According to NutraIngredients, the latest breakthrough involves genetically-modified yeast that converts sugar into proteins found in milk. The proteins are then added to a mixture of plant based fats, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to create a milk that is vegan and lactose-free. It also has the added bonus of being environmentally friendly, requiring 98% less water and 91% less land use to produce than cow’s milk. For those wondering how to get their hands on this new moo-free milk, you’ll have to be patient—it’s not expected to be released until 2017. In the meantime, here are some available alternatives:

  • Banana milk. Banana milk is naturally sweet and may be a good source of potassium.
  • Oat milk. Oat milk has 4 to 5 grams of protein per serving and may contain high amounts of soluble fiber.
  • Cashew milk. Cashew milk is naturally sweet and may be a good source of protein and calcium.
  • Coconut milk. Coconut milk is low cal and may be a good source of vitamins and minerals.
